Broadly speaking, my work looks at the ways humans interact with their surroundings.
Recurring themes are ecology, conservation and the underwater world. While human figures are seldom visible in my natural landscapes, their impact is unmistakably present. I try to capture the tension between human absence and influence. My use of both natural and man-made materials further explores the tension between humanity and nature.
Through my work, I seek to organise my fascination with the world and its inhabitants, presenting a visual narrative that encourages viewers to contemplate their own relationship with the natural world. The goal is not to provide solutions but to gain a deeper connection and understanding of the complex and often contradictory ways in which we engage with our environment.
My creative process involves developing images from my photographic archive in a darkroom to create a distinct texture and atmosphere. I then incorporate a variety of materials, both natural and synthetic, experimenting with their interactions to amplify the underlying themes. This mixed media approach allows me to explore the dynamics between the organic and the artificial, ultimately creating pieces that evoke the connections and contrasts within our environment.
I believe in our modern context, humanity has estranged itself from the natural world, creating artificial habitats that starkly contrast with our original surroundings. Today, when we speak of 'nature' it is often as something distant, a place to visit briefly rather than a part of ourselves. This notion feels contradictory to me, as we are inherently part of nature. My art is an exploration of this intricate relationship, visualising my experiences and posing questions.
